Why choose physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a holistic service that helps our patients get the most out of life. Our Hornsby physio team help when you’ve had an acute injury, you’ve got general pain and stiffness or even a more complex issue that has been long-standing. We can also assist if you’re concerned about a potential injury or problem. We listen to your needs and develop a plan that is specific to your condition. We work with your other health practitioners to try and achieve the best result possible.

We are located in Hornsby, right near The Hornsby Hospital. We service all of the surrounding suburbs; Berowra, Mt Kuringai, Mt Colah, Asquith, Waitara, Wahroonga, Normanhurst, Thornleigh and Pennant Hills.

Our physiotherapy clinic focuses on the treatment of musculoskeletal pain and chronic health issues. Some of the typical issues we are experts in are:

  • Low back pain
  • Osteoporosis
  • Neck pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Upper and lower limb injuries
  • Obesity
  • Sports injuries
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic pain
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Women’s Health
  • Inflammatory disorders

We will assess your problem and create an individualised plan for treatment. This will involve you as the patient to help guide us to what goals you wish to achieve, both short term and long term. Once we have a treatment plan in place we can begin to make progress. We will constantly reassess and progress our physiotherapy treatment as you get better.

What sort of treatment do we use?

As physiotherapists, we have been taught an array of tools and strategies that we can utilise for treatment. Our job is to pick the appropriate tool for the right patient. One of the key aspects to physio treatment is advice and education; as the patient, it is really important that you have a clear understanding of what is causing your problem and the steps required to fix it. Our treatment plans are holistic in nature and focus on making improvements to your lifestyle, activities and general health. These areas are especially key in the more complex pain problems and difficult injuries.

If you have been suffering for a long time and have had no luck with treatment in the past it may be because of some lifestyle factor that was hindering your ability to recover. It could be that you are stressed and your system is always in the flight or fight mode. It could be that your sleep is not adequate and you aren’t allowing your body enough time to recover. It could be that your nutrition is poor and you aren’t getting the right fuel in your system to repair. Or it could be that a lack of general exercise has limited your muscle mass and has left you susceptible to injury. Either way, it is key to address these underlying lifestyle factors and start to implement a plan to make some positive changes. Our hornsby physio team are well qualified and have an excellent understanding of strategies that can help you achieve these goals.

In a more acute setting, we utilise manual therapy as a tool to help reduce pain and it is quite effective. Manual therapy helps to dampen down the nervous system and allow the body to relax, facilitating healthy movement and reducing your pain.

We also utilise specific exercise as a tool to help reinforce strength and stability when required. This is especially useful post-surgery or with any sports injury.

Good physio requires a skilful and thorough assessment, collaboration with the patient for goal setting and treatment planning, and good execution of plans to achieve the results required.

Back Pain

Back pain is one of the leading causes of visits to a physiotherapist. Interestingly, less than 1% of all back pain has a severe pathological cause. We approach the management of back pain using a bio-psycho-social framework. We assess your movement, function and pain behaviour thoroughly and help you find a solution. Our approach focuses on education around the mechanisms of pain. How to appropriately manage your pain and what the appropriate course of action is. We appreciate that back pain is complex and every patient is different, so we tailor our treatment sessions appropriately. Talk to our Hornsby physiotherapy team to find out more.

Headaches/TMJ Disorders

Headaches and jaw pain can be debilitating sources of pain. They can stop you in your tracks and cause you a lot of distress. It is important with headaches and jaw pain to identify the source of pain. Our focus is on developing active coping strategies for pain relief. Exercises and improvement in movement patterns is critical in finding a solution. It is also important to rule out other potential drivers of headaches such as dehydration or allergies.

Sports Injuries

The injury of the over 35s "insert sport" superstar! We know that you may be as enthusiastic as when you were 20 but the reality is if you haven't played soccer for the last 12 years then you may be a bit more susceptible to injury when you make your valiant return. It is important with any sport that you have a tailored approach to injury prevention, with a focus on flexibility and strength. If you do happen to tweak a muscle in the last 5 minutes of the game, don't stress, we can help get you back on the field in no time. Our Hornsby physiotherapists are experts in managing sporting injuries and would be more than happy to help you.

Neck & Shoulder Pain

Neck and shoulder pain seems to be synonymous with the desk jockey. You find yourself slumped over the computer for 9 hours, with an hour long commute on the train each way to only exacerbate the problem. We know that it's not possible to give up your day job just yet but there are some strategies we can employ to try and combat the constant desk work. Remember, movement is healthy!

Pregnancy Pains

There is a lot of physical changes going on through the duration of pregnancy. Our resident Women's health physiotherapist Nikita has all of the strategies needed to help you manage through what can be a tough time. Nikita has completed an intensive 5 day Women's health physiotherapy course as well as a pre and post pregnancy exercise course, so you won't find a physio more qualified than Nikita to help you out!

Post-Operative Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation post surgery is arguably more challenging than the surgery itself. It takes a lot of perseverance, guidance and determination on your part. We have the skills to help you navigate the tough terrain post surgery. Jamie and Scott have both worked extensively in physio departments specialising in post-operative rehab. Give the team a call today.

Knee Pain

There is a lot of conflicting water cooler chat regarding knee pain. The common misconception is that "my knees are buggered from all the running I did when I was younger". Recent research completely debunks this myth. In fact, the more active you are, the thicker the  cartilage between the knee joint. This occurs as the more you "stress" the knee joint, the more cartilage is laid down to protect the joint. Movement is the key! We can help you get out of pain and get back to your favourite activities!
